“What’s good sis? You been straight,” asked Adri when I walked into the house.

It was a new day, and I was in a good mood. Last night was the toughest night I had since I’ve accepted the situation between Cassim and I. I hate to admit it, but I cried myself to sleep. Cassim’s behavior was too much to bear at times, but last night was the first time I was actually, seriously afraid of him. He was unstable, and I wasn’t sure if Riley would be visiting him next week. I needed him to get some help if he wanted to keep seeing her.

I sat Riley’s car seat on the couch, and hugged Adri.

“I’ve been good, Adri. You been alright?”

We pulled away from the hug and he nodded with a big grin on his face. “Hell yeah sis. Everything been A-1.”

“You must got a new bitch or something. Why you smiling so hard?”

“Nah, nah,” he paused and scratched the back of his neck. “G do.”

My eyes widened. “What?!”

“Shit crazy right? Bruh don’ bagged him a bitch,” he excitedly exclaimed.

I laughed. “Swear to God? Where he at?”

Time spent with my brothers had always been bittersweet since Juice’s death. The pain had eased a bit, but it still stung. Especially when we were like this. Laughing, joking, and just kicking it. Juice was always uptight, but his presence was felt, and since he’s been dead it’s been greatly missed.

“Took the bitch to coney a minute ago,” said Adri steady smiling, looking down at Riley. “Niece getting big out here. She eatin good, now that you eatin good” He paused and glanced up at me. “I’m glad you good sis, on God.”

“Yeah, I’m good. But are you?”

I knew my brothers were still doing dumb shit in the streets, and I hated it. At least when Juice was alive they had structure. Now with him gone, and Goose pretty much running things, they were wilder than ever before. I prayed long and hard for them each and every night. It was just crazy to me… looking at my brother, and the way he’s carrying himself, you wouldn’t be able to tell that he kills people for a living. How nonchalant he is about it still sends chills down my throat. Adri could be doing so much more. Shit, Goose too, with the way he cooks. But these nigga wanna keep doing dumb reckless shit.

“Always, sis. Always,” he said as he unbuckled Riley’s car seat. “How long you plan on staying up there? Heard shit was wild my baby.”

He changed the subject on purpose, but I let it slide. For now, at least.

“I don’t know. About thirty minutes or so. I don’t like seeing her like that,” I said before shaking my head. “Breaks my heart.”

“I know right? Shit, tell her I said what up doe. I’m not steppin’ foot in that bitch,” he said as he carried Riley to what used to be my room.

Adrien was babysitting Riley for me while I visited LeeLee.
